Formula One: Vettel wins First Indian Grand Prix

Sebastian Vettel Kisses his first place trophy after claiming victory at the First Indian Formula One Grand Prix

German Sebastian Vettel has won the inaugural Indian Grand Prix at the Buddha Innternational Circuit in Noida. He is followed on the second place by Jenson Button.

What a start! As the lights spelt go, there was plenty of contact in the back of the grid while Sebastian Vettel, in pole position, pulled away from the pack. Jenson Button turned Fernando Alonso and then passed Mark Webber to track Vettel's run. It was a good start for Michael Schumacher while Kamui Kobayashi retired early while there were a fair number of pit stops after all the initial bustling.

The tussle between Webber and Button was the highlight in the wee quarters, with the former activating his DRS in lap 4 but the McLaren driver was miserly with his space.

Felipe Massa who pipped Lewis Hamilton early on then stuck to the back of teammate Fernando Alonso.

Vettel clocked fastest laps with ease and led with the others giving chase but Button did not make things too easy for the German driver. He clocked three consecutive fastest laps (11, 12, 13) to eat into Vettel's time to get the proceedings heated up. By lap 21, none of the top six cars were within a second of each other.

Lap 24 saw Massa running wide at turn one which allowed Hamilton to close up and the Briton drives up the inside but Massa turned in and questions must've been asked about why the Ferrari driver was unwilling to avoid an accident there even if he was unwilling to yield the corner.

Sure enough, Massa gets a drive-through penalty for causing a collision.

Chic and Cheap Ways for Furniture Makeovers

Furniture Makeovers

Old entertainment armoire transformed into a stylish home office!

creative furniture

*They replaced the upper pullout shelf with a fixed painted plywood shelf hung on wooden brackets, which we screwed directly into the armoire's back wall.
*They cut Homasote boards (recycled fiberboards soft enough to sink pushpins into) to fit the back and the side door panels and covered them in fabric secured with a staple gun. Small screw hooks hold each panel in place; you can also simply screw the panels to the corners.
*They swapped out dated brass hardware for pretty (and inexpensive) glass knobs.

creative furniture

The original TV shelf became a functional slideout work surface. To make it movable, they screwed two drawer glides (available at hardware stores) into the top of the base about 6 inches in from the sides and then set the shelf into the glides. Knobs make it easy to pull the shelf out and push it back in.

*They gave the whole piece a light sanding, a coat of primer, and two coats
of semigloss latex paint in a pale blue shade on the outside and a deeper

*To dress up the doors, they picked out a pair of modern nickel pulls.

Out-dated side table with stone top transformed into a bright and cheerful accent piece!

*First they removed the hardware and stone top, sanded the table all over,
and applied a coat of primer.
*Then they gave it two coats of semigloss latex paint in a lively citrus hue.
*For a pull, they threaded a length of cord through the existing hardware holes,
knotted the cord on the inside and trimmed the ends.

*They cut a length of seagrass wallpaper to fit the inset and topped it
with a pane of 1/4-inch glass. Switch the paper to change the look.

Secret desk drawer that opens with a magnetic handle

This project is about concealing valuables, secrets, bad habits and personal information in our workplaces. Here, hidden spaces/ messages were created within 8 general objects such as wood boards, lamps and disposable coffee cups.

Why doing this?
We all have the need of hiding.

We hide our valuables from being stolen, we conceal our past from our loved ones, we never show our real side to colleagues, we all have secrets. Or, sometimes we just want to keep something only for ourselves.

How?
Utilize stereotypes and visual camouflage.

We make judgments based mainly on our experiences and what we see. This dependency on visual information can create large blind spots. Thus, usual stereotypes of how we perceive solid, transparency and lighting are employed in this project to play with notions of ‘solid and void’, and ‘true and false’.

Cricket: India defeat England by five wickets in 3rd ODI

cricket-india vs england India took an unassailable 3-0 lead by inflicting a crushing five-wicket defeat on England in the third one-dayer at the PCA stadium in Mohali on Thursday.

Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (35*) and Ravindra Jadeja (26*) added 65 runs for the sixth wicket to take India to victory after they were in a spot of bother at 235/5.

With seven runs needed off the last over, Dhoni hit fours on the first two deliveries by Tim Bresnan to seal victory for India.

Graeme Swann trapped Virat Kohli plumb in front of the wicket as India lost their fifth wicket.
Kohli hit 5 fours in his 30-ball 35 before falling to Swann.

Ajinkya Rahane fell short of his maiden century by 9 runs as he mistimed a Steven Finn slower delivery into the hands of England captain Alastair Cook at mid-off.
Rahane hit 6 fours in his 104-ball 91.

In the next over, Suresh Raina hit a Tim Bresnan delivery staright into the hands of Kevin Pietersen at short extra cover. Raina failed to trouble the scorers.

Pietersen took a superb diving catch at point to dismiss Gautam Gambhir off Finn.
Gambhir hit a six and 3 fours in his 60-ball 58.

Ajinkya Rahane and Gambhir hit half-centuries as India crossed the 150-run mark with one wicket down.

Gambhir reached his 27th half-century off 53 balls with a six over long-off off Graeme Swann.
Gambhir brought up the 100-run partnership with Rahane off 91 balls.

Rahane hit his second half-century off 59 balls with the help of four hits to the fence.

Tim Bresnan gave England the first breakthrough when he trapped Parthiv Patel plumb in front of the wicket.

Patel hit 3 fours in his 46-ball 38 and put up a 79-run opening stand with Ajinkya Rahane.
Patel and Rahane brought up the Indian 50 in 9 overs as the hosts got off a good start in pursuit of 299-run target.

Earlier, Jonathan Trott's unbeaten 98 and brisk half-centuries by Samit Patel and Kevin Pietersen powered England to 298/4.

Trott remained undefeated on 98 that came off 116 balls with the help of 8 hits to the fence.
Patel's unbeaten 70 came off 43 balls and was studded with 2 sixes and 7 fours and he justified his promotion up the order ahead of Jonny Bairstow.

Trott and Patel added 103 runs off 71 balls for the fourth wicket and the stand came after Praveen Kumar clean bowled Ravi Bopara with a fantastic yorker.
Trott hit his fifteenth fifty soon after Ravindra Jadeja trapped Kevin Pietersen plumb in front of the wicket.

Pietersen hit a 61-ball 64 with the help of 9 fours and added 101 runs with Trott for the third wicket to revive England.
Virat Kohli gave India the second breakthrough when he scalped Craig Kieswetter to reduce the visitors to 53/2 in 12.1 overs.

Kieswetter, who scored 36 off 38 balls with the help of three fours and two sixes, attempted to squeeze it out to the off side but it took the inside edge and went onto rattle the stumps.
England again suffered an early jolt when seamer Vinay Kumar struck to dismiss skipper Alastair Cook.

Earlier, England skipper Alastair Cook won the toss and decided to bat first against India. Both India and England retained the same sides from the first two games at Hyderabad and New Delhi.

Teams:

India: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (captain and wicketkeeper), Gautam Gambhir, Parthiv Patel, Ajinkya Rahane, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Umesh Yadav, Vinay Kumar, Praveen Kumar.

Satya Vachan: The evil you do remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!

*A woman baked chapatti (roti) for members of her family and an extra one for a hungry passerby. She kept the extra chapatti on the window sill, for whosoever would take it away.*

*Every day, a hunchback came and took away the chapatti. Instead of expressing gratitude, he muttered the following words as he went his way:

"The evil you do remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!" *

*This went on, day after day. Every day, the hunchback came, picked up the chapatti and uttered the words: "The evil you do, remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!" The woman felt irritated. "Not a word of gratitude," she said to herself...* **

*"Everyday this hunchback utters this jingle! What does he mean?" One day, exasperated, she decided to do away with him. "I shall get rid of this hunchback," she said. And what did she do? She added poison to the chapatti she prepared for him! As she was about to keep it on the window sill, her hands trembled. "What is this I am doing?" she said. Immediately, she threw the chapatti into the fire, prepared another one and kept it on the window sill. As usual, the hunchback came, picked up the chapatti and muttered the words: "The evil you do, remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!" The hunchback proceeded on his way, blissfully unaware of the war raging in the mind of the woman. Every day, as the woman placed the chapatti on the window sill, she offered a prayer for her son who had gone to a distant place to seek his fortune. For many months, she had no news of him.. She prayed for his safe return.*

*That evening, there was a knock on the door. As she opened it, she was surprised to find her son standing in the doorway. He had grown thin and lean. His garments were tattered and torn. He was hungry, starved and weak. As he saw his mother, he said, "Mom, it's a miracle I'm here. *

*While I was but a mile away, I was so famished that I collapsed. I would have died, but just then an old hunchback passed by. I begged of him for a morsel of food, and he was kind enough to give me a whole chapatti. *

*As he gave it to me, he said, "This is what I eat everyday: today, I shall give it to you, for your need is greater than mine!" “As the mother heard those words, her face turned pale.* **

* She leaned against the door for support. She remembered the poisoned chapatti that she had made that morning. Had she not burnt it in the fire, it would have been eaten by her own son, and he would have lost his life! It was then that she realized the significance of the words:* **

*"The evil you do remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!" Do well and don’t ever stop doing Good, even if it is not appreciated at that time.*

Kohli and Gambhir powers India to 8-wicket victory over England

india england 2nd odi virat and gambhir

World champions India rattled England once again with bat and ball to win the second one-dayer by eight wickets on Monday and take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. Seamer Vinay Kumar returned with his best international figures of four for 30 as a lacklustre England were shot out for 237 in good batting conditions at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground in New Delhi.

Scorecard

Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir powered India to 8-wicket victory ove England. They couldn't have been any more comfortable at home than they were at the Ferozeshah Kotla on Monday.

Like pukka Delhiites, they played by the numbers, an assured ease and a calculated approach to help India overhaul England's 238-target with surprising ease. Kohli, in particular, made another strong claim for a berth in the Test squad for the upcoming series against the West Indies with an unbeaten 98-ball 112, a knock head and shoulders above the rest of the batting competition from either side. The runs have been coming at such fair clip it's hard to believe this feisty young batsman is already seven ODI centuries old.

India will also welcome Gambhir's return to international form following injury and the painful incidents of the England tour. He played excellent senior statesman with a fluent, unbeaten 84, trademark whips, cuts and steers in place as Kohli flicked, drove and pulled with elan at the other end.

That India finished the game with 80 balls remaining and eight wickets in hand is a fair indication of their complete superiority. Vinay Kumar picked up a career-best haul and even the English fielders were outshone by their Indian counterparts.

The chase didn't start out easy, though, since after 8.5 overs, India too were exactly 35/2 like England had been earlier in the day, both teams having lost the openers. But while Cook and Kieswetter departed without putting up a run on the board and the Trott-Pietersen combine perished after a decent start, Gambhir and Kohli - having found themselves together after 6.5 overs - clinically proceeded to fashion a new record for the third wicket with their unconquered 209-run stand.

England had their moments, like when Steven Finn bowled with fire and repeatedly beat the bat. They often employed aggressive fields too, but not at times when it was really required, and will be left wondering whether Cook's captaincy was a little underdone.

The pitch was slow but Kotla's usual demons had taken the day off, meaning England had only themselves to blame for putting up a low total. They batted as if promises were meant to be broken, every favourable partnership being broken on the cusp of lending the innings an air of authority.

Wickets fell in pairs and the batting, even given England's continued travails on India's slow pitches, was quite out of character. The match had been billed as a battle between India's slow bowlers and a visiting lineup hesitant in tackling spin. But having prevented Ashwin and Jadeja from wreaking havoc, England didn't do themselves any favours by succumbing to the seam-up stuff of Vinay Kumar (4/30 off 9 overs). Praveen Kumar and third seamer Umesh Yadav too chipped in with satisfying contributions as seven wickets were taken by the faster men.

An impulsive England had negated Kohli's pre-match prediction of spinners holding sway but failed to capitalize on the Powerplays and lost their wickets in 48.2 overs. Even before the Kohli-Gauti spectacular, MS Dhoni's men had bowled to a plan and reaped the rewards.

Movie Review : My Friend Pinto lacks focus or suspense

My Friend Pinto
The country bumpkin irritates, exasperates and is difficult to deal with but he is blessed with a heart of gold. The miracle man will interact with you for a few minutes and your life will change forever. All the petty strife and rivalries which have so far populated your existence will suddenly cease to exist. The protagonist as a naïve charmer has become an often repeated theme largely due to the success of the Munnabhai series.

But a simple quirky idea generally isn't enough to generate a masterpiece. There have been plenty of other films which talked about life-altering events occurring during the span of a single day or night. Kuch Love Jaisa and Utt Patang are just two of the duds which come to mind.

My Friend Pinto is one such caper destined to sink at the box office this Friday.

Slapstick humour is like a many-times-patched, retreaded tyre often rolled out during the second half of the film hoping to accelerate the pace. But slapstick needs to be combined with an edgy script, crisp repartee and laugh-a-minute gags to keep the audience engaged and entertained.
My Friend Pinto which was probably planned as a social satire on urban life style and the inherent callousness of ruthless money minded city slickers turns into a meaningless one-night stand. Pun intended.

Now returning to Prateik Michael Pinto, who has just landed in Mumbai. He's here to meet and spend a week with his childhood friend Sam (Arjun Mathur). Sam is a yuppie who puts up with an overbearing boss at the office and a domineering wife at home. In this chaos lands up his childhood buddy Pinto who hopes to spend a week with him.

Pinto behaves more like he's travelled two hundred years through a time machine to reach Mumbai instead of the overnight journey he's undertaken to reach Mumbai Central station.  There is murder and mayhem all around him but Pinto remains oblivious of this fact. And the mindless so called humour begins.

A crowded station, two gun-toting goons, a conman on the run with a huge bag stuffed with moolah could have been the most appropriate fertile ground for the hilarity to begin. But first-time director Raagav Dar prefers to focus on Prateik the actor and lets the supporting cast slip into the background. And somebody tripping on a suitcase or accidentally wrenching off a handle are jokes associated more with the Rohit Shetty school of humour.

Trite gags are interwoven in a script lacking in focus or suspense. The characters keep up popping up at random intervals and then disappear from screen. Makarand Deshpande plays a retired Mallu Don who wishes to keep his mistress happy. Makarand tries hard to make the audience laugh, but in today's times is the 'mallu' accent enough to have the audience rolling in their seats? Not really, despite a valiant effort Makarand doesn't even succeed in evoking a chuckle.

There's Divya Dutta as Reshma, a failed actress who tries hard to seduce a younger man. Considering the oomph factor which Divya is capable of oozing on screen, it is one more opportunity lost as the all-pervading air is one of buffoonery.

Kalki Koechlin's Hindi speaking abilities improve with every film. But she is a bit of a miscast as she looks older than Prateik. A small role carried off effortlessly.

My Friend Pinto is a great opportunity for Prateik to showcase his skills both as an actor and a dancer. The young awkward boy from Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na has metamorphosed into a fine and confident actor. An endearing smile which can win many over many pretty young things. Yet he doesn't look like a shy young lad who has never visited a big city. A miscast for this role.

Paying homage to the all-time cult film Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron there is also a dead body being lugged around and which needs to be disposed off at the earliest. Doesn't form an integral part of the story, it appears as an add-on to a shoddy script.

As the grand finale Ragaav Dar summarily commentates on the lessons embedded in the script. Doesn't say much for his story-telling abilities.

See this only if you are a Prateik Babbar fan. Else avoid.

Cricket-India crush England by 126 runs in first ODI

dhoni
SCORECARD
India's spinners wreaked havoc, after captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Suresh Raina starred with the bat, to clinch a 126-run victory over England on Friday in the first of five one-day internationals.

Ravindra Jadeja picked up three wickets with his part-time left-arm spin and off-break bowler Ravichandran Ashwin took three more as England, chasing a target of 301, were bundled out for 174 in 36.1 overs at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

After electing to bat first India were reduced to 123 for four but Dhoni (87 not out) and Raina (61) helped them rally to finish on 300 for seven.
The home team smashed 150 runs in the last 15 overs as Dhoni and Raina, who survived a close run-out decision on 16, flayed the England attack.
Jadeja also contributed with the bat with a 22-ball 27 on a slow wicket.
India, playing at home for the first time since winning the 50-over World Cup in April, failed to win a single international match on their tour of England earlier this year.
The visitors, who left out Ian Bell and selected young Jonny Bairstow instead, suffered a middle order collapse after captain Alastair Cook (60) fell to Jadeja.
Opener Cook hit seven boundaries and put on 71 for the third wicket with Jonathan Trott (26) before he holed out in the deep while trying to up the scoring rate.

Mayawati inaugrates Rs 685-crore park in Noida

685-crore park
Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati has inaugurated Rs 685 crore magnum opus Bhim Rao Ambedkar Park dedicated to Dalit leaders in Noida.

With statues of 24 elephants, the symbol of her Bahujan
Samaj Party, and of Dalit icons BR Ambedkar and Kanshi Ram and of herself, the 82-acre Rashtriya Dalit Prerna Sthal and Green Garden has been a subject of massive controversy.

Mayawati, in a speech after the inauguration, said the money spent on the Rs 685-crore park came from donations and only "one percent" of state goverment funds were used. She justified the park on the grounds that it honoured Dalit leaders and question. She questioned the memorials and projects named after members of the Nehru Gandhi family.
Thousands of people had gathered since morning to watch Mayawati inaugurate the park on the outskirts of New Delhi, with many political observers saying that it was a move aimed at the assembly elections next year.
Unmindful of the criticism that she has received for the park with some describing ut as monumental folly, Mayawati touched down in a helicopter at 4.50pm in Film City in Noida.
As TV cameras captured the moment, a beaming Mayawati went around the premises. Buddhist monks chanted prayers. Unusually, her parents Ramrati and father Prabhu Dass were with her.
Traffic in and around Noida came to a standstill. Police officials said they had a tough time in controlling the surging crowds.
Bhim Rao Ambedkar Park

685-crore park

The 33 hectare project in Noida's sector has 15 statues of Dalit icons Dr BR Ambedkar, Jyotirao Phule and Kanshi Ram
Bronze statues of Mayawati have also been erected in Noida. Twenty statues of elephants and fountains with bronze elephants have also been installed in the park.
The UP chief minister, known for her fondness for statues, also has a special police force to protect parks and memorials for Dalit icons. Latest LED tubes, that cost around Rs 4crore, have been installed in the park, to make the structures look more attractive at night.
“The lighting solutions have been provided by foreign firm Philips Gardco. More than 3,000 LED tubes have been installed in the park. Each tube costs Rs 12,000,” said a senior project manager.
In December 2010, vacating its year-long stay, the Supreme Court (SC) had approved resuming construction in the Park, rejecting the Centre's objection that part of its site was on forest land.
The court said construction could start only after the government planted sufficient number of trees on 50% of the Park area to create a buffer zone between the site and adjacent Okhla bird sanctuary.
In addition, the apex court also observed that the area under concrete structures should be brought down from 35% of the project site to 25% because of the Park's proximity to an eco-sensitive zone in the sanctuary.
Meanwhile, everything in the Ambedkar Park exists for a reason. “The boundary stone was specially ordered from Mirzapur, a Naxal-affected district, by Behenji to provide employment to tribals,” said a senior civil engineer, requesting anonymity.
The main structure, christened Dalit Prerna Sthal, houses statues of Dr BR Ambedkar, Kanshi Ram and Mayawati.

Happy 57th Birthday to REKHA, the evergreen beauty of Bollywood!

Her glamorous persona still has men gawking. Rekha, who turns 57 today, metamorphosed into a diva from the overweight young actress she once was, and continues to inspire the current league of actresses.
Scroll down, for some rare pics of Rekha, the evergreen beauty of Bollywood!

Daughter of southern star Gemini Ganesan, Rekha bagged overnight success with her debut vehicle 'Sawan Bhadon' (1970) and gradually became India's sex symbol. What catapulted her to the Bollywood zenith was Muzaffar Ali's period drama 'Umrao Jaan' (1981) that even won her a National Award.

Having acted in more than 150 films, she made her presence felt with her versatility and different avatars in films like 'Do Anjaane' (1976), 'Ghar' (1978), 'Muqaddar Ka Sikander' (1978), 'Khubsoorat' (1980), 'Silsila' (1981), 'Baseraa' (1981), 'Utsav' (1984), 'Khoon Bhari Maang' (1988), 'Ijaazat' (1988), 'Kama Sutra' (1996) and 'Zubeidaa' (2001) to name a few.

Last seen in a cameo for Shah Rukh Khan-starrer 'Om Shanti Om' (2007), industry insiders have often spoken of Rekha as a 'capable, disciplined actress with immense range, ability and mastery of precise detail'.

'She is a dreamer... she lives in her own world. She imagines a lot of things that suit her psyche as an actor. She is a very genuine, warm and a very sensitive person... And no denying the fact a very good learner. It has been an amazing experience to work with her; she is a perfect actress,' says film critic Muzaffar Ali.

'Post-'Umrao Jaan', she has kind of withdrawn herself... perhaps because that role was a very cerebral, cultural and classical one that raised her to a pedestal that cannot be surpassed ever... not by her or by anyone else,' he added.

'Rekha is nearest to the parallel of Swedish actress Greta Garbo... they both came from poor backgrounds and climbed great heights... As an artist she was first noticed in 'Ghar' and after that she was no more termed as only a voluptuous artist in Hindi cinema because then came films like 'Khubsoorat' and 'Umrao Jaan' that set her apart,' said noted film historian Gautam Kaul.

'She is enigmatic... because she is hard to get. She only moves in a small circle of senior film people and she shuns the media. That's also because she is a tragic figure with failed relationships... none of which succeeded, so she has withdrawn into herself. The only place she is now noticed is award functions, which are also picked and chosen. But she still doesn't give any interviews,' he added.

Rekha is also known for her lifestyle and glossy image.

'Rekha is a diva... In fact, the term diva (in India) was coined for Rekha. The way she has metamorphosed herself from what she was when she came into the industry is mind blowing... She has worked on her language, body, diction, everything and apart from that she's a fantastic actress,' said renowned film critic Omar Qureshi.

Rekha is also rumoured to be penning her autobiography and is also tentatively to appear in the sequel to 'Krrissh'.

Mumbai stun Bangalore in Champions League final

With all the injuries and replacements at the start of the tournament, one wouldn't have given Mumbai Indians a chance of getting to the knockouts at the Champions League, let alone winning it today. On a slow wicket at the Chidambaram Stadium with just 139 runs to defend, Harbhajan Singh led Mumbai astutely. He took 3-20 and Royal Challengers Bangalore were crushed by 31 runs in a low-scorer.

Bangalore started the chase strongly with Tillakaratne Dilshan and Chris Gayle adding 38 in four overs. In the next 10, they made 39-5. Harbhajan and Chahal choked the runs dry on a wicket that seemed considerably slower than earlier.

Mumbai raised their fielding a notch, took the catches that mattered. By the end, Bangalore had fallen so far behind the required rate, it's hard to tell looking at the scoreboard that they were ever in the chase.

Harbhajan gambled by giving Lasith Malinga a third over in his first spell. Malinga delivered with his first ball. Dilshan swung across the line and missed. Gayle fell to a dubious LBW to Harbhajan when his front leg was a long way down the wicket. Mumbai had a foot in the door.

Mayank Agarwal and Virat Kohli, still feeling the effects of batting on the Chinnaswamy belter, didn't last long and were caught in the deep slogging slow turners. Arun Karthik and Mohammad Kaif fell the same way but they were under considerable pressure from the mounting run-rate.

Three run-outs dented Mumbai before they could steer the innings to substantiality. It wasn't sensational fielding but Mumbai's sloppiness. Opener Sarul Kanwar was ball-watching at the non-striker's end when he ignored Aiden Blizzard's call and got him out.

Suryakumar Yadav was promoted above Kieron Pollard and batted usefully for 24. Then he backed up too far and Vettori ran him out in his follow-through. The big wicket was James Franklin's (41) and some lazy running with Pollard cost him his wicket.

In the next over by Vettori, Mumbai fell apart. Pollard strange half-hearted loft couldn't clear mid-on. Harbhajan Singh was given not-out by Kumar Dharmasena to plumb LBW first ball. But he was given LBW to a faster delivery next ball which clearly seemed heading down the leg-side.

This loss extends Bangalore's poor run in T20 finals. They had lost IPL finals in 2009 and 2011.

9 Little-Known Facts About Steve Jobs

apple
We all know Steve Jobs as the man behind the magic, but what we don't know is the magic behind the man. The unfortunate passing of this pioneer left us with a lot of unanswered question. Who was this guy? why was he so passionate about this product? How did he become who he was?  Can his success be duplicated? - Probably not - Here are some interesting tidbits about the life of Steve Jobs.

1. Childhood
Steve Jobs was born on February 24, 1955 in San Francisco, California. He was put up for adoption and was shortly adopted by a couple named Clara and Paul Jobs. Paul was a machinist for a laser company and Clara was an accountant. Years later, Jobs sought the identities of his birth parents. He discovered his mother was a woman named Joanne Simpson, a speech pathologist, and his father, Abdulfattah John Jandali, a vice president of a Nevada casino. Though Jobs remained close with Simpson, he remained estranged from Jandali.

2. He dropped out of college!
In fact, Jobs never came close to graduating college. Surprising, considering he was one of the most brilliant masterminds behind the most successful company in the world. After graduating from high school in Cupertino, Jobs enrolled in Reed College in Oregon, where he stayed for a total of one semester. He dropped out due to the financial strain the tuition placed on his parents. In 2005, Jobs gave a commencement speech at Stanford University in which he described his short-lived experience at Reed: "It wasn't all romantic. I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms, I returned Coke bottles for the 5 cent deposits to buy food with and I would walk seven miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple."

3. He lied to Apple co-founder about a job at Atari.
We all know Jobs for his amazing innovations in mobile technology, software, and computers, but what most people don't know is that he helped in the creation of Atari's game, Breakout. Jobs was offered $750 for his work on the product development, with the possibility of a bonus $100 for each chip eliminated from the game's final design. To help him with this challenge, Jobs called upon Steve Wozniak, a man who would later become one of Apple's co-founders. Because of Wozniak's talent, Atari gave Jobs a $5,000 bonus, which he kept all for himself! He gave Wozniak a total of $375 for his help with the job.

4. His marriage
Jobs did an excellent job keeping his family and marriage out of public watch. In the public eye, Jobs was known for donning his signature black turtleneck and jeans on stage solo. However, at his Palo Alto home, Jobs had a family with his wife, Laurene. Laurene was an entrepreneur with a degree from University of Pennsylvania's Wharton business school and an MBA from Stanford, where she met Jobs for the first time.
Though he was always dedicated to his company, Jobs skipped a meeting to take Laurene out for their first date. Jobs says: "I was in the parking lot with the key in the car, and I thought to myself, 'If this is my last night on earth, would I rather spend it at a business meeting or with this woman?' I ran across the parking lot, asked her if she'd have dinner with me. She said yes, we walked into town and we've been together ever since." The two were married in the Ahwahnee Hotel at Yosemite National Park by a Zen Buddhist monk.

5. His sister is a famous author.
While searching for his birth parents, Jobs also discovered his biological sister, Mona Simpson. You may know her as the author of the well-known book, Anywhere But Here, a story about a daughter and her mother that was later made into a film starring Susan Sarandon and Natalie Portman. After their first meeting, the two became best friends and spoke every few days.

6. Celebrity flings
In an authorized book entitled The Second Coming of Steve Jobs, one of his college buddies wrote that Jobs had a short fling with musician Joan Baez. Baez later confirmed that the two were close for a brief period of time, but she is more known for her romance with Bob Dylan (coincidentally, Jobs' favorite musician). According to the same biography, Jobs also dated actress Diane Keaton.

7. His first child
At age 23, Jobs and his then girlfriend Chris Ann Brennan had a daughter, Lisa Brennan Jobs. Her birth in 1978 came just as Apple was gaining fame in the technology world. Jobs and Brennan were never married, and he denied his paternity for some time, stating in court documents that he was sterile. However, he had three more children with his wife, Laurene. Years later, Jobs reconciled with Lisa and paid her tuition at Harvard.

8. Alternative lifestyle & drug use
Jobs has hinted a few times that he had some experiences with the psychedelic drug, LSD. In fact, he once stated about Bill Gates: "I wish him the best, I really do. I just think he and Microsoft are a bit narrow. He'd be a broader guy if he had dropped acid once or gone off to an ashram when he was younger." Albert Hofmann, the Swiss scientist who first synthesized LSD approached Jobs asking for funding for research pertaining to the therapeutic uses of LSD. Jobs has admitted to these experiences, calling them "one of the two or three most important things I have done in my life." He suggests that his experiences with acid have contributed to the different approach that makes Apple's designs so unique.

After visiting India, Jobs took a trip to a famous ashram and returned to the United States as a Zen Buddhist. Furthermore, Jobs was a pescetarian who avoided eating most animal products with the exception of fish. Jobs also had a firm belief in Eastern medicine and before he had his first surgery for his cancerous tumor, he tried alternative approaches and specialized diets.

9. His Estate
Even though he is the CEO of the world's most valuable brand name, Jobs made an annual salary of just $1 since 1997 (his first year as Apple's lead executive). Jobs often joked about his meager salary, saying: "I get 50 cents a year for showing up, and the other 50 cents is based on my performance."

At the start of last year, he owned 5.5 million shares of the Apple corporation, which are now valued at $377.64 each. This demonstrates a 43-fold growth in valuation over the last 10 years. Because of these shares, Jobs leaves behind an enormous portion. He earned $7 billion from the sale of Pixar to Disney in 2006. Forbes magazine rated Jobs as the 110th richest person in the world, with a net worth of $8.3 billion. Had he not sold his shares upon leaving Apple in 1985 (prior to returning in 1996), Jobs would top the list at the world's fifth richest individual.

No word has been given pertaining to plans for his estate, but Jobs has his wife, his three children with Laurene, as well as his first daughter to account for.
